Terrified New York Dog Stayed Hidden In His Bed, Until His Foster Mom Tried Something Completely Different

When a profoundly fearful dog arrived from an overwhelming situation, rescuers weren’t sure he could ever be a pet. Then, a dedicated foster family decided to take a chance on him.
A Heartbreaking Arrival

When a dog named Tiki was brought in through an ASPCA community case in New York, his spirit was completely broken. His previous owner had been overwhelmed with too many dogs, leaving Tiki profoundly terrified of the world around him.
Rescuers described him as by far the most shut-down dog they had ever seen. The trauma he carried was so heavy that shelter staff had serious doubts about his future.
They didn’t have much confidence that he could be rehabilitated. At the time, it seemed unlikely that this terrified pup would ever be able to live comfortably as a beloved pet.
Taking A Chance On A ‘Lost Cause’

Despite the heartbreaking prognosis, a foster volunteer named Isabel and the team at Muddy Paws Rescue decided to step in. They knew the road ahead would be incredibly difficult.
“This could be a lost cause, he could be too far gone, but let’s just give it a try,” Isabel recalled thinking. She welcomed Tiki into her home, hoping a quiet environment would help him decompress.
The reality of his fear was immediate. For the first four or five days, Tiki did not leave his bed or even lift his head to look at his new foster mom. He was in much worse shape than she had anticipated.
Giving Him Room To Breathe

By day six with her extremely fearful foster dog, Isabel decided to change her approach. She wanted to give Tiki the opportunity to explore the apartment on his own terms.
She removed the gate surrounding his crate and left the crate door wide open. There was no pressure, just a quiet invitation to step out when he felt ready.
Initially, Tiki still didn’t want to leave his safe space. But Isabel remained patient, knowing that forcing him would only set him back further.
One Brave Step Forward

The patience paid off the very next morning. On day seven, Tiki finally left his crate for the first time.
Isabel realized that as soon as she stopped trying to force his progress, he actually started to move forward. The steps were incredibly slow, starting with just placing one foot outside his crate.
Soon, he was sitting entirely outside the crate and doing “big stretchies.” He also started showing little back wiggles, which signaled to Isabel that he was truly capable of feeling joy.
Monumental Milestones

When fostering dogs with severe trauma, the smallest milestones are actually massive victories. To outsiders, a dog taking a few steps might seem ordinary, but for Tiki, it was monumental.
By day 11, Isabel could feel a shift in the air. Her extremely fearful foster dog was watching her closely, and she could sense he was finally craving connection.
“I just know this dog is so close to letting me pet him,” she noted at the time. The invisible wall between them was slowly crumbling.
The Magic Of Day 13

The breakthrough they had been waiting for finally arrived on day 13. To Isabel’s amazement, Tiki walked right up to her and actively requested to be pet.
To ensure he felt safe, she kept taking her hands away to give him the opportunity to walk away if he wanted to. Instead of retreating, Tiki just kept looking up at her and nuzzling back into her hands.
It was an incredibly sweet and emotional moment. Soon after, her partner, “Mr. Isabel,” also got to sneak in some gentle pets with the brave little dog.
The Ultimate ‘We Made It’ Moment

By day 14, Tiki was stepping closer and closer to Isabel’s lap. She waited patiently for the day he would feel secure enough to cuddle with her.
Eventually, that beautiful moment arrived. Tiki climbed entirely into Isabel’s lap for the very first time, seeking out the warmth and comfort he had been denied for so long.
For Isabel, this was the ultimate “we made it” milestone. The dog who couldn’t even lift his head just two weeks prior was now actively seeking out affection.
A Safe Person And A Brave Dog

The bond between them continued to blossom, and Tiki even allowed Isabel to give him his first kiss. By day 30, it was clear that Tiki was completely comfortable with her.
Isabel reflected on how honored she felt to be chosen as his safe person. She began referring to him not as a shut-down dog, but as her “extremely brave, inspiring foster dog.”
His journey of healing was a testament to what a quiet, loving environment can do for a broken spirit.
A Message Of Healing And Hope

Tiki’s incredible transformation deeply resonated with people who followed his story. Isabel believes his journey is a powerful reminder that no one is ever too damaged to heal and feel joy.
Watching him slowly blossom into the happy dog he was always meant to be was one of the most joyful experiences of her life. All he needed was someone to believe in him.
Today, Tiki’s story has a perfect ending. He has officially found his forever family, leaving behind a legacy that reminds the world to always “be brave like Tiki.
