Found unresponsive at home: What we know so far
Burrell was discovered in her Brooklyn apartment at around 7:50AM on June 17.
NYPD officials said she was found “unconscious and unresponsive” and pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.
An autopsy has been scheduled, but no official cause of death has been announced.
Burrell’s family confirmed the heartbreaking news and issued a heartfelt statement shortly after news of her death was reported.
“Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered,” her family wrote. “Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.”
Just five days earlier, Burrell had shared a smiling selfie to Instagram — what would unknowingly become her final post.
On Thursday, June 12, Burrell crossed paths with 84-year-old New York City icon Elizabeth Eaton Rosenthal, famously known as The Green Lady of Brooklyn. Their meeting clearly meant a lot to both women.
Burrell captioned the post: “I ran into @greenladyofbrooklyn in my neighborhood today!! I’m not going to lie — I have been keeping an eye out for her. I may or may not have followed her down the street for a minute. She is just lovely!!! #ilovewhatido #luckygirl”.

Alongside her caption, Burrell posted a bright, grinning selfie with Rosenthal, both women smiling under the New York sun.
Just a day after the post went live, Rosenthal herself responded in the comments section.
“Hi Ann it was so much fun meeting you,” Rosenthal wrote. “See you again soon in the neighborhood […] the only thing I make is coffee and fig preserves from my fig tree […] love and hugs […] Elizabeth”
In a follow-up comment written just two days ago, Rosenthal extended a now-bittersweet invite, writing: “Come to my garden and pick figs when they are ready […] usually beginning to ripen beginning September, and come and visit the garden on a sunny day anyway.”
However, after news broke of Burrell’s death, Rosenthal returned to the post with a far more somber message. “Hi Anne […] you are such a lovely person just to meet and not knowing you […] I just love you and so sorry but come to my garden and visit with all your beauty and love and I will be waiting for you.”
As the news of Burrell’s death spread, her final Instagram post began to transform into a digital memorial. Fans, friends, and followers flooded the comments with tributes and memories.
One commenter wrote: “This feels unreal. Your joy was contagious. Rest easy, Anne.”
Another added: “What a light you were. This picture says everything about the heart you had.”
“Rest in peace beautiful lady. You will be extremely missed,” a third commented.
Best known for her powerhouse presence on Food Network, Burrell appeared in shows like Iron Chef America, Chef Wanted, Chopped, and Worst Cooks in America. Her most recent appearance was in House of Knives, which aired in March 2025.
She authored two popular cookbooks, including the New York Times bestseller Cook Like a Rock Star and Own Your Kitchen: Recipes to Inspire and Empower.

She is survived by her husband Stuart Claxton, his son Javier, her mother Marlene, sister Jane, brother Ben, and her children Isabella, Amelia, and Nicolas.
Our thoughts continue to go out to Burrell’s family, friends, and fans at this time.
