The kitten stopped.
The water was wide and slow, and something about it felt frightening. The kitten meowed, small and shaky, unsure which way to go.
High above, in the branches of a fig tree, a monkey was eating fruit when he heard the sound. He tilted his head, listening closely. It wasn’t a bird or another monkey—it was a cry for help.
The monkey climbed higher for a better look and spotted the kitten near the river’s edge. The monkey knew this place well. It was beautiful, but it could also be dangerous for someone so small. The monkey’s chatter grew louder as he climbed down, calling out as if to warn others nearby to stay away.
Slowly and carefully, the monkey approached the kitten. He didn’t rush or scare it. Instead, he moved calmly, placing himself between the kitten and the water. The kitten froze at first, wide-eyed, but the monkey’s steady presence made it feel just a little safer.
The monkey tapped the ground and motioned away from the river, guiding the kitten step by step. When the kitten hesitated, the monkey stayed close, blocking the path behind and encouraging the kitten forward. Together, they moved through the grass, farther from the water and closer to dry, open land.
At last, they reached a safe spot beneath a large tree. The kitten sat down, tired but unharmed, and let out a soft meow. The monkey paused, watching closely to make sure the kitten was truly safe.
Satisfied, the monkey climbed back into the trees. Before disappearing into the leaves, he looked down one last time. The kitten was calm now, curled safely in the shade.
The river returned to its quiet rhythm, as if nothing had happened at all.
But for one small kitten, and one brave monkey, it was a moment that showed how courage and kindness can appear where you least expect them.
